A little over half of Cambodia’s labor force is engaged in agriculture, and about one-third of its gross domestic product comes from the agricultural sector. The government in 2010 targeted growth in rice production, hoping to boost exports and rural incomes. Rice production doubled from 2003 to 2013, from 4.3 million tons to 9.3 tons, according to the World Bank. But making a splash in the export market has been difficult, as neighbors Vietnam and Thailand are major exporters. Cambodian authorities had hoped to export as much as a million tons of rice by the end of this year. But milled rice exports reached just over 387,000 tons in 2014, up just 2.2 percent from 2013, according to the Agriculture Ministry.
